Wi-Fi could enhance the performance level of mobile internet on smartphone devices, giving consumers more of an opportunity to access marketing material, an expert has said.
More than one billion Wi-Fi chipsets will be shipped annually by 2012, figures from In-Stat forecast revealed earlier this week (September 21st).
According to Dr Steve Smith, research director at Coda Research Consultancy, smartphone users who choose Wi-Fi over 3G “won’t be dependent upon the operators for giving them decent coverage and decent speed”.
“Traffic offloading is really important and we will see a lot more traffic offloading going on,” he said.
Faster speeds may encourage people to use their mobile internet services more frequently and could mean mobile marketers will see an improvement in response rates.
Mobile marketing is set for huge growth with an ABI Research report predicting expenditure on the platform will exceed $1.2 billion (£797 billion) by 2015.
